GMB WELCOMES £1 BILLION SHIPYARD DEAL

GMB Union now calls on the Secretary of State for Defence Gavin Williamson to ensure the approx £1 billion contract to build up to three Royal Fleet Auxiliary (RFA) Fleet Solid Support (FSS) Ships will be built in the UK

GMB, the union for shipbuilding and ship repair, has welcomed the announcement from Defence Minister Stuart Andrew of a new  £1bn deal. [1]

The deal will bring much needed ship repair and maintenance work to a number of yards in the UK, with reports claiming it will cover a total of 17 Ships and support hundreds of jobs over many years.

Ross Murdoch, GMB National Officer and National CSEU Chair for Maritime, said:

“GMB welcomes this announcement that secures jobs and much needed prosperity to a number of ship repair communities in the UK”

“However this is a time when our shipbuilding members are fighting for their future at Appledore Shipyard in North Devon. [2]

“GMB now calls on the Secretary of State for Defence Gavin Williamson to bring even more much-needed good news and prosperity by ensuring the approx £1 billion contract to build up to three Royal Fleet Auxiliary (RFA) Fleet Solid Support (FSS) Ships will be built in the UK.

“He must also make sure his department works with the yard to gain bridging work that saves it from potential closure and takes them to and places them in the running for a share of future Type 31e Frigate and/or FSS work.”
