GMB WELCOMES THUMBS UP FOR NEW WELSH NUCLEAR REACTORS AT WYLFA NEWYDD ON ANGLESEY
The country desperately needs the electricity and jobs these zero-carbon nuclear reactors will produce as part of balanced energy mix of renewables, nuclear and gas says GMB.
GMB, the union for nuclear workers, has welcomed the decision to give the green light to a new Welsh nuclear reactor.
The Office for Nuclear Regulation (ONR) has given the thumbs up to Wylfa Newydd’s nuclear reactors.
The body is satisfied that the new reactor meets regulatory expectations on safety, security and environmental protection at this stage of the regulatory process.
Justin Bowden, GMB National Secretary, said:
“GMB welcomes this decision by the ONR as a very important step along the road to a much needed new nuclear reactor in Wales.
“As the existing UK fleet of nuclear power stations reach the end of their working lives, the country desperately needs the electricity and jobs these zero-carbon nuclear reactors will produce as part of balanced energy mix of renewables, nuclear and gas.
“We now need to see the Government doing its bit around funding to drive down the cost to hard up consumers further down the line.”
